This dataset is the Global Historical Environmental Dataset. It provides updates and expansions to the Global Historical Environmental Database (HYDE, v 3.2.1). HYDE combines state-of-the-art historical population estimates and land use data. Its categories include cropland, with new distinctions made between irrigated and rainfed crops (excluding rice) as well as irrigated and rainfed rice crops. It also includes pastureland, which is categorized into more intensive pasture, modified pasture, and untransformed natural (less concentrated) pasture. Population is represented through maps of total population, urban and rural populations, population density, and built-up areas. The spatial resolution is 5 arc-minutes (approximately 85 km² at the equator). This dataset only contains data for selected years: 0 AD, 1000 AD, 2000 AD, 1000 BC, 5000 BC, and 10000 BC.
