Materials of a Studio Tongue

This project considers the exploration of four core materials: graphite, sunflower seeds, paper clay and chalk. In the work and exegesis, these discrete materials are opened to different technical and conceptual processes in relation to the question of language retention. Pursued from the position of a Chaldean speaker in diaspora, the studio tongue forefronts a focus on endurance of marginalised, unwritten and erased language. Materials are employed through translational and poetic processes by looking to cultural objects, lineage and inheritance, sites and traditions, learning and creative rebuilding.
