MatCha is a benchmark specifically designed for materials characterization image understanding. It provides a comprehensive evaluation framework that reflects real-world challenges faced by materials scientists. The dataset contains 1,500 expert-level questions focused on materials characterization, covering 4 stages of materials research across 21 distinct tasks. The questions are designed to mimic real-world scientific challenges and provide the first systematic evaluation of multimodal large language models on materials characterization.
