Quantifying the cancer risks and burdens (2017-2021) from Fumonisin exposure in selected sub-Saharan Africa study areas

This study synthesizes data to guide health decisions regarding dietary fumonisin exposure and its correlation with esophageal and liver cancer risks in sub-Saharan Africa. A systematic review adhering to PRISMA guidelines identified 56 studies across 10 African countries, with 21 included for data synthesis. Critical numerical data on diet fumonisin levels were extracted alongside health metrics from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) for 2017-2021. Monte Carlo simulations estimated a median 5-year prevalence of dietary fumonisin-induced esophageal and liver cancers.
