世界には、大量破壊兵器である核弾頭を防衛力の一部として保有する国が複数存在します。2024年1月時点で各国が保有していた核弾頭の数は約1万2,100個にのぼり、ほぼ9割を保有していたのが米国とロシアでした。冷戦の終結と共に、各国が保有する核兵器の数は減少し続けていますが、それでもなお、上記の2か国が世界の核兵器の大半を保持しています。
核弾頭とは
都市を丸ごと消滅させ、数百万人を殺傷する能力を持つ核弾頭は、大量破壊兵器です。さらに、被爆した地域では、長い年月を経ても放射性物質による汚染が続き、自然環境や後世の人々にも長期にわたって甚大な影響を及ぼします。実戦で使用された核兵器は、第二次世界大戦末期の1945年に、米国が広島と長崎に落とした2つの原子爆弾のみです。核兵器の使用がもたらす壊滅的影響にもかかわらず、一部の国は核実験を定期的に行っています。
世界各国の対応
その圧倒的な破壊力から、核兵器の禁止を巡る論争は現在も続いています。2017年7月には、国連総会で「核兵器禁止条約」の採決が行われ、139か国がこの条約を支持し、核兵器の保有に反対する立場を取りました。しかし、2022年の米国の核兵器開発予算の見通しが示すように、核兵器への投資は減るどころか増えているのが現状です。また、ロシア政府も同様の姿勢を見せています。

As of January 2024, the total number of nuclear warheads held by various countries was approximately 11,100, with the United States and Russia accounting for nearly 90% of this total. Despite the decline in the number of nuclear weapons held by countries since the end of the Cold War, these two nations still maintain the majority of the world's nuclear arsenal. Nuclear warheads have the capability to annihilate entire cities and cause the injury or death of millions. Additionally, the affected regions may continue to be contaminated by radioactive substances for many years, exerting long-term, severe impacts on the natural environment and future generations. The only nuclear weapons used in combat were the two atomic bombs dropped by the United States on Hiroshima and Nagasaki towards the end of World War II in 1945. In light of the devastating consequences of nuclear weapon use, some countries still conduct regular nuclear tests. The debate over the prohibition of nuclear weapons continues to this day. In July 2017, a vote on the 'Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons' was held at the United Nations General Assembly, with 139 countries supporting the treaty and taking a stance against the possession of nuclear weapons. However, as indicated by the projected budget for nuclear weapon development in the United States in 2022, investment in nuclear weapons is not decreasing but rather increasing. Similarly, the Russian government has demonstrated a similar attitude.
