资源简介:
This collection comprises images from strip, map and sample excavations, archaeological monitoring and hedge break recording at the Truro Northern Access Road, West Langarth, Truro. Work was carried out by Cornwall Archaeological Unit over two seasons during 2022 and 2023. A total of seven SMS Areas and seven watching briefs were carried out, alongside ongoing hedge break recording throughout. Significant features identified included a major Bronze Age boundary at West Langarth, overlain by a small oval structure and field enclosure of possible Late Iron Age or Romano-British date. A more substantial roundhouse of Iron Age date was recorded at the eastern end of the scheme. This was associated with a rectilinear field system, some of the ditches from which were re-used to form part of later medieval into post-medieval Cornish hedges. A scant background of possible prehistoric activity was recorded underlying the lost settlement of Venton Green. There was substantial evidence for the post-medieval (16th to 19th century) life of the settlement, with some evidence for older features, including an earlier field system, possibly extending its origins back as far as the 12th century. The remains of a Second World War D-Day camp were also recorded, alongside numerous further pits and ditches across the scheme, largely undated, but some of which were of likely prehistoric origin.
