# Brazilian Foreign Policy Discourse on Social Media ## Dataset: Twitter/X Data (2019–2022) This repository documents a dataset collected for the doctoral thesis **\"Digital Patriots and Proud Pariahs: How the Brazilian Far Right Mobilises Foreign Policy Discourse on Social Media\"** (Anna Carolina Raposo de Mello, PhD, Universidade de São Paulo / King's College London, 2024). --- ## About the Dataset The dataset comprises over **12 million tweets** published between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2022, covering foreign policy discourse during Jair Bolsonaro's presidency in Brazil. It is organised into three sub-datasets: - **Dataset 1 — Globalism**: tweets containing the terms *globalismo*, *globalista*, and *globalistas*, examining the concept of globalism as a binding keyword in far-right digital communities. - **Dataset 2 — Brazilian Foreign Policy Topics**: tweets discussing key bilateral relations (US, China, Venezuela, Israel) and multilateral organisations (UN, Mercosur, OECD, WTO, BRICS, G20), as well as environmental, human rights, trade, and global health agendas. - **Dataset 3 — Brazilian Foreign Policy Leaders**: tweets published by five key discursive authorities: President Jair Bolsonaro, congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo, presidential adviser Filipe Martins, and the official Itamaraty profile (44,920 tweets). --- ## Methodology Data was analysed using a **mixed-method approach**: - **Network analysis**: community detection via the walktrap algorithm; visualisation via the Fruchterman-Reingold model - **Qualitative discourse analysis**: examination of the 50 most-retweeted original tweets per community, coded for discursive structures and rhetorical mechanisms --- ## Access This dataset is available upon request for academic research purposes.
