Das 5,22 Meter hohe Marktkreuz wurde um 958 von Erzbischof Heinrich I. als Wahrzeichen des neu eingerichteten Marktes und als Symbol des Marktfriedens und der erzbischöflichen Stadtherrschaft errichtet. Es stellt das offenbar älteste unter den in Belgien und Frankreich erhaltenen, mittelalterlichen Marktkreuzen Europas dar.

The 5.22 meter high market cross was erected around 958 by Archbishop Henry I as a landmark of the newly established market and as a symbol of the market peace and the archbishop's city rule. It is apparently the oldest of the medieval market crosses in Europe preserved in Belgium and France.
