PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide RNA sequence-specific mediators of RNA interference. SOLUTION: Disclosed herein is a double-stranded RNA in a form of two separate RNA strands not covalently linked， where respective strands of the isolated double-stranded RNA are 21-23 nucleotides in length， and one of the strands of the isolated double-stranded RNA has complete sequence complementarity to mRNA of a gene， the isolated double-stranded RNA causes cleavage of the mRNA to mediate the RNA interference of the mRNA of the gene， and the mRNA is cleaved within a region of sequence-complementarity with the isolated double-stranded RNA.
