Geological Map of the Federal Republic of Germany 1:200,000 (GÜK200) — CC 5510 Siegen

Leaf Siegen depicts the geological conditions in the right-Rhine slate mountains. Sauerland, Siegerland, Lahn-Dill-Mulde, Taunus, Westerwald and Neuwieder Basin are cut on. The saddle structure of the winner country with sediment rocks of the Lower Devon strokes south-west-north-east across the map sheet. To the north it is bounded by the Sauerland: While in the saddle structure of the Ebbegebirge, in addition to Unterdevon, older sediments (Ordovizium and Silur) bite out younger layers in the trough structures (such as Lüdenscheider Mulde, Gummersbach-Mulde, Attendorn-Elsper-Mulde). Striking are the occurrences of mass lime in the Attendorn-Elsper-Mulde, whose sedimentation took place during the Upper Middle Devon or deep Upper Devon in limited reef areas. Smaller occurrences of these reef limestones can also be found in the Lahn-Dill area, which limits the Siegerland to the east or southeast. The Lahn-Dill area on the eastern beach of the map sheet is pervaded by many disturbances and faults. In its complex geological structure, the Dill-Sink can be distinguished in the northern area, the Lahn-Senke in the southern area and the inter-between Hörre-height train. In addition to the pelagic sedimentary rocks of the Upper Devon and subcarbons (e.g. clay slate, lime knot slate, pebble slate), volcanic rocks appear in the Lahn-Dill area, e.g. shawl stones (Givet-Adorf) and Deckdiabas (low carbon). A special feature is the Giessener Blanket (Kulmgrauwacke), which is recorded north of the Taunus foothills in the southeast corner of the map section. Since the Giessener Grauwacke lays in the slopes of the same age but faciely different pelagic rocks, it is interpreted as an erosion residue of a ceiling overlaid from the south. In the southern part of the map sheet is the young volcanic area of the Westerwald. Here, an increased magmatism in the Upper Oligocene/Untermiocene led to the eruption of volcanic rocks (mainly basalte, subordinate Andestite, Trachyt, Phonolith). In the lowlands there are often quaternary overlays by flowing earths or loess. In the southwest corner of the map sheet, the young vulcanite deposits of the Neuwieder Basin (quarter pumice). In addition to the legend, which informs about the age, genesis and petrography of the represented units, a geological profile provides additional insights into the structure of the subsurface. The profile cuts the Ebbegebirge, the Attendorner-Elsper-Mulde, the Siegerland saddle, the Lahn-Dill area and the Taunus.
