Treatment of sanitary sewer and multiple effluent reuse

Abstract A synthesis is presented of a four years research project on wastewater treatment, by means of a UASB + BF + polishing ponds system, and reuse in agriculture, aquaculture and animal production. Irrigation of forage crops with UASB + BF effluent and its use for cattle and goat feed did not result in potential human health risks nor in real animal health risks. Polishing ponds were effective in producing effluents in accordance with the WHO guidelines for irrigation and aquaculture, achieving lettuce crops and fish suitable for consumption. The effluents fertilizing potential and nutritional value demonstrate the possibility of their application in productive activities with chemical fertilizers and fodder savings.
