VPRS 14539 Cancellation Cards, Closer and Discharged Soldier Settlement

This series consists of cards summarising the cancellation of leases by the Board of Land and Works after the Proclaimed Day of 1st March 1939. Details may also be found regarding these in VPRS 11870 Schedules of Land Grants, Leases, Licences and Sales Submitted for Approval to the Board of Land and Works.Cards are arranged in three sections. The first set are according to area of the state with a classification based on whether the lease was forfeit (F) or that of a marginal area (X), the second being Section 13 cases and the last set being a listing for cancellations from 1933 to 1938. Section 13 of the Closer Settlement Act 1933 allowed settlers to be paid up to one hundred pounds in compensation where their leases had been cancelled by the Commission for breaches of conditions not arising from the inefficiency or neglect of the lessee.Details available are the date of the meeting (of the Board of Land and Works), whether the area was irrigable or not and the conditions under which the lease was cancelled. These conditions might have been surrender, cancellation, cancellation with compensation, voluntary cancellation with compensation, cancellation with transfer to other land, surrender with the land vacated, and surrender by migrants in receipt of a monetary grant. Note is also made whether it was Closer Settlement, Soldier Settlement or a Migrant settler. Other details are the size and location of the land, the name of the lessee, details of the date of any appeal, details of the notification in the Government Gazette and to the Office of Titles and whether the holding had been vacated.
