Site Data from an Archaeological Strip Map and Record Excavation at Ardwick, Bennett Street, Manchester, February to March 2023

This collection consists of images, text, databases and a spreadsheet from an archaeological strip map and record excavation at Ardwic, Bennett Street, Manchester, from February to March 2023. The excavation exposed the entire footprint of the J.M Bennett and Sons iron foundry building. The internal layout, coupled with the location of finds assemblages allowed us to identify process flow and potential brass casting. A platform for a Cornish boiler and the site of a potential furnace utilising waste-heat boilers accounted for how the internal machinery was powered. Rail sidings linked to the main railway network indicated how materials were imported and finished products exported from the foundry.
