Beyond footwear: apparel and dressing in emergency department injuries among older adults in the United States, 2005-2025

Code and derived data behind the article "Beyond footwear: apparel and dressing in emergency department injuries among older adults in the United States, 2005-2025". Emergency department visits recorded by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System for 2005-2025 in which a garment or a shoe appears, for adults aged 65 and over: 43,252 cases in the analysis panel, of which 39,071 were worn. Run-together words in the narratives are first separated using word frequencies from every NEISS narrative; each case narrative is then coded into the garment item, the design attribute named and the mechanism of injury by the rule set in 20_scripts/codebook.json, and every coded case keeps the matched text that produced its label. The archive holds the full pipeline (harvest, coding, Census and SEER denominators, age-standardized rates with stratified variance and the Commission's stability criteria, the trend with joinpoint regression, its sensitivity series and the level shift at the 2024 sample revision, the weighted severity model with design-based covariance, every term of the full model and four sensitivity models, the clinical profile of each garment group, seasonality with a design-adjusted Wald F test and Holm adjustment, the ascertainment audit, the rule set scored against reviewed human coding of a stratified sample of 400 narratives with the key of that sample, the shares and trends corrected for coding error with bootstrap intervals, dressing injuries by 5-year age band, and the time-use exposure denominator from the American Time Use Survey 2003-2025), the derived data those scripts write, the five figures (PDF, PNG at 300 dpi and TIFF at 600 dpi), the seventeen tables and the structural checks. The annual source files are not redistributed: 10_raw/neiss_manifest.csv carries, for each of the 21 files the analysis read, the URL, the byte count and SHA-256 of the uncompressed file as the Commission serves it, and its number of records. The analyses measure the composition of the injuries and its change over time, severity compared within the injured cases, the seasonal pattern of each garment group, and, for dressing, a rate per hour spent washing, dressing, and grooming and its gradient across age bands; shares and trends are given as coded and as corrected for the rule set's precision and recall.
