The Eastern Woodchuck (Marmota monax), also known as the groundhog, is a native rodent species found from Central Alaska through eastern Canada and south of the tree line to Labrador. The woodchuck is a recognized animal model for pathogenesis and therapy of chronic hepatitis B virus infection. We report a high-quality woodchuck genome assembly from long-reads to support the hepatitis virus-induced woodchuck model of hepatocellular carcinoma. A high-quality genome assembly will facilitate the study the immunopathogenesis of virus-induced liver cancer and to guide the development of clinical intervention to promote the host anti-tumoral response.
