Digital Archive from an Archaeological Evaluation at Main Road, Broomfield, Chelmsford, Essex, 2017

This collection comprises image, text, spreadsheet and CAD data from trial trench evaluation work on land west of Main Road, Broomfield, Chelmsford, Essex. The work was undertaken by Archaeology South-East between September and October 2017. The trial trench evaluation comprised the investigation of 128 trenches across the 25.6 hectare site area and targeted the results of prior geophysical survey. Archaeological remains were found in 104 of a total of 128 trenches across the site. A low density of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age remains were recorded across the south of the site. A high density of Late Iron Age/Early Roman to Mid/Late Roman remains were found in the north-east of the site, defining part of a probable roadside settlement and surrounding field systems. Three outlying cremation burials and a large rectangular occupation enclosure were also recorded. Medieval remains were confined to the south periphery of the site, along a historic lane, and probably related to occupation and agricultural activity focused upon two ditched enclosures. Parts of the relict post-medieval field system were also recorded.
