VPRS 9932 Wages and Salaries Books

This series consists of a comprises wages and salary books recording the amount of wages and salaries per week or fortnight paid to employees of Melbourne Electric Supply Company (MES Co) from 1912 to 1930. The MES Co. (Electric Light and Traction Company) was established in 1901. In 1930 the company sold its electrical undertakings to the State Electricity Commission, but continued to operate as an investment company until 1937, when it went into liquidation. It is believed that the SEC maintained these books from 1930 onwards.The wages and salary ledger (for all MES Co. employees in Melbourne and Geelong) includes the following details:name of employeedate paidamount paidweek/endingyearly salary.From 1930 onwards the salaries were paid into nominated bank accounts.The meter readers wages books record the weekly pay of each meter reader and the total wage bill for the week. The total amounts entered in these books were probably summarised and added to the general wage and salary ledger.
