GeoNet New Zealand Seismograph Network

The GeoNet Project was established in 2001 to monitor New Zealand’s natural hazards and to provide freely available, high quality data to the research community. The GeoNet National Seismograph Network is one of GeoNet’s monitoring networks. It is made up of broadband and short-period instruments distributed around New Zealand, including offshore islands; Raoul Island and Chatham Islands. Broadband stations are evenly distributed throughout the country, and these are supplemented by more densely spaced instruments focussing on volcanic regions, areas of highest hazard, and population. Some stations in the network were operational prior to the start of the GeoNet Project; these were folded into the project. Since 2001, the seismograph network has rapidly expanded around the country.
