My Reading of the Voynich Manuscript Breanne Porsch Wilken …. Wilken Key, Version 4.0 (attached) My updated 4.0 Wilken Key is attached to this document. What follows is an overview of how I interpret the manuscript’s major divisions and why I believe they form a single coherent system rather than a collection of unrelated material. I read the Voynich manuscript as a rule-based encoding system built around a procedural medical-alchemical workflow. It is not a random collection of drawings and glyphs. It is a structured manuscript in which each section performs a distinct role within one larger process, and the images, vocabulary, repetitions, and page order all support that reading. The difficulty has never been that the manuscript lacks structure …. it is that the structure operates across multiple layers simultaneously, and those layers have to be read together. The herbal section functions, in my interpretation, as the manuscript’s raw-material layer. These pages identify plants, roots, leaves, bark, flowers, and gathered substances that enter the system at the beginning of the process. The drawings are not purely botanical illustrations; they serve as ingredient maps. The text attached to them describes preparation, extraction, and early-stage processing before the material advances into later sections. The herbal pages are also where section-sensitive vocabulary matters most. A cluster may carry one meaning here and a different one further into the manuscript, because the text does not operate from a single flat dictionary applied uniformly across all pages. The central question in the herbal section is straightforward: what raw virtue is being gathered, separated, or prepared? The astronomical pages function as a timing and control system. These are not decorative star charts. They establish the seasonal and celestial logic that governs the rest of the manuscript, and the zodiac signs mark stages in the operational cycle much like a calibrated calendar of process states. In my model, the astronomical section tells the reader when to act, not only what to do. Aries begins fresh loading, Taurus moves into release and unyoking, Gemini brings combination, Cancer establishes the bridge, Leo marks crossing, Virgo handles arrival and condensation, Libra measures and quenches, Scorpio drives potency, and Sagittarius completes delivery. This is the manuscript’s mechanical timing layer. The astrology pages are related but functionally distinct. I separate them from the astronomy pages only in the sense that astrology provides the interpretive layer connecting celestial position to operation, phase, and season. It is not fortune-telling in any modern sense. It is a control language for when specific transformations should occur. This is why I treat celestial markers, sun symbols, star points, and zodiac forms as operational cues. They cross-reference the biological and botanical sections and help synchronize each page’s imagery with the text’s instruction layer. Astrology, in this manuscript, is the timing intelligence. The rosette foldout is, to me, the manuscript’s master map. I read it as the structural overview that organizes the whole system into connected zones, showing how the manuscript’s sections relate to one another rather than presenting unrelated pages. It is not symbolic art in any decorative sense. It is the central control surface of the manuscript …. the place where spatial arrangement, directional logic, and procedural sequencing converge. The foldout makes clear that the work is not strictly linear …. it is networked, with multiple routes feeding a central operational core. I should note here that the rosette region is also one of the places where the missing folios become significant. The foldout structure implies a larger architecture than the surviving leaves fully preserve, and where the layout suggests continuation, the absence of additional material is not a neutral gap. It may hide transition pages that would otherwise explain movements in the sequence that currently appear to compress or skip. I return to this point below. The biological section functions as the bodily treatment layer. These pages use figures, pools, tubes, and repeated vessel imagery to describe how material is administered through or into the body system. The page logic is therapeutic and physiological rather than narrative. The manuscript maps treatment states, humoral states, and delivery paths. The green pools carry particular weight in my reading …. they mark Fringe-phase delivery throughout the biological folios and identify where material is functioning within the treatment cycle. I do not read these pages as bath scenes. I read them as a controlled representation of bodily processes under an active treatment sequence. I also read the additional breast imagery throughout this section as part of the manuscript’s operational language. These forms are not present simply to represent the body in a literal sense. Instead, they appear to mark points where the work of the manuscript becomes embodied …. points of loading, transfer, nourishment, treatment, or delivery. In the biological section especially, these visual markers fit the same logic as the vessels, pools, and channels that appear alongside them. They function as embodied process cues, helping to identify where the action is happening and what kind of transformation is underway. Read this way, they are structural body symbols that belong to the same procedural system as every other repeated form in the manuscript. The pharmaceutical section is the vessel-and-preparation layer. Here the manuscript becomes more explicit about containment, mixing, sealing, transfer, and compound handling. Jars, bottles, labels, and vessel types all carry meaning because they indicate how material is being staged. It is worth noting that the body imagery of the biological section carries forward here in a quieter way …. the logic of points of transfer and delivery does not stop at the biological folios. It continues into the vessel work, connecting the treatment of the body to the preparation of the compounds used in that treatment. The grammar of preparation is especially visible in this section, with the text giving instructions for moving a compound from one condition to another through sealing, measuring, combining, or re-verifying. In my key, the pharmaceutical pages are the bridge between raw ingredient work and the final recipe procedures. The recipe pages are the most procedurally direct material in the manuscript. I read them as operational instructions, not summaries or decorative text. They represent the end-stage of the system, where all the earlier layers come together into complete working sequences. Repetition on these pages is not accidental …. it intensifies meaning, confirms state, or marks a transition in the operation. The recipe pages are where the manuscript becomes most explicit about dosage, order, closure, and verification. They are the executable layer. The animals and unusual figures throughout the manuscript are, in my reading, functional markers. They help identify stage, transition, or process type …. sometimes signaling timing, sometimes reinforcing the section’s meaning, sometimes marking the action’s destination or state. The same motif can behave differently depending on whether it appears in a botanical, biological, pharmaceutical, or astrological context, which is consistent with the broader section-sensitive logic of the entire manuscript. The language system itself operates on that same principle. The Voynich script is a structured code with section-sensitive vocabulary and grammatical layering. It does not work like ordinary prose, where a word keeps one fixed meaning everywhere it appears. Instead, the same token may shift according to section, phase, and surrounding illustration. Some units are state markers, some are action markers, some handle dosage or quantity, and some are terminal or verification markers. The text is procedural language, not free narrative. The seasonal cycle ties all of this together. I read the manuscript as moving through a full seasonal cycle that runs from opening to winter storage and back again. The nine-stage distillation key gives a sequence that begins with fresh preparation, proceeds through loading, combining, bridging, crossing, arrival, quenching, potency, and completion, and then enters winter storage before reopening in spring. That cyclical structure means the book is not describing isolated treatments. It is preserving a repeatable system that resets, stores, and re-enters at the proper time. A note on the missing folios The missing folios are not incidental to my interpretation …. they are structurally significant. Their absence suggests that the manuscript once contained a more complete operational sequence, and that the surviving pages preserve only part of that cycle. Where the system appears to jump or compress a transition, the missing material is the likely explanation. The clearest cases involve the winter storage and reset stages. In my key, Capricorn and Aquarius are removed from the visible sequence, and I read that removal as either deliberate or functionally meaningful rather than accidental. The manuscript seems to withhold or omit the most sensitive stages of its own cycle. That pattern makes the gaps part of the manuscript’s logic rather than simply damage to it. The missing folios matter most in three areas. The first is the winter stages themselves, where the removal of Capricorn and Aquarius breaks the otherwise continuous zodiac sequence. The second is the rosette region, where the foldout’s architecture implies material that the surviving leaves do not fully account for. The third is anywhere the operational sequence advances too smoothly …. those moments of apparently clean transition are the places where an absent folio may have carried the explanatory step the current layout skips over. In each of these cases, the gap is not empty. It is meaningful, and treating it as part of the system rather than outside of it changes how the surrounding pages read. Taken together, the surviving pages of the Voynich manuscript …. along with the structural logic of what is missing …. read as a coherent medical-alchemical operating manual. The herbal section provides raw materials. The astronomy and astrology pages control timing. The rosette foldout maps the structure. The biological section describes bodily treatment, including the embodied process cues that mark points of transfer and delivery throughout its folios. The pharmaceutical section handles vessel and compound preparation. The recipe pages complete the process. The animals, figures, colors, and repeated forms are part of that same system, and the gaps, where they exist, are part of it too. The Wilken Key, at version 4.0, is my best current model of how those layers fit together and what they are doing.
