VPRS 11965 Register of Accounts

This series was the register of the receipt of accounts for Portland Gaol (1881-1892) and Ballarat Gaol (1892-1952). The accounts were forwarded to the Penal & Gaols Branch for processing. This series also recorded payments to permanent and temporary employees as well as to other regular providers of services to the gaol (such as doctors and chaplains). Unit 3 includes entries for both Portland Gaol, from 1881 to 1892, and Ballarat Gaol, 1928 to 1952. Accounts and other claims for payment were assigned a sequential number from the register. Details included in register were: period of service, name of claimant, description of claim, amount, etc. The date the gaol received the account and to whom it was forwarded was also recorded. The accounts were received from various contractors and suppliers, for goods such as meat, coffee, flour and bread, and for services such as repairing locks, removing nightsoil, etc. Details of payment of wages to permanent employees at Ballarat Gaol may be found in Unit 1. Similar information for employees at Portland Gaol between 1881 and 1892 may be found in Unit 3. Details included: name, position and payment details for each employee. At times, further information was recorded, such as the amount of tax deducted, sick leave taken, pay increases, etc..
