<b>Survival consequence of female polymorphism in a territorial damselfly</b>

Many animals have evolved elaborate colorations that serve various biological and ecological functions. However, most studies have focused on males, limiting our understanding of the evolution of pigmentation in females. Empirical studies have shown that elaborate color displays and wing melanization in males are often indicators of good condition. Here, we test this hypothesis by investigating the survival consequence of female phenotypic polymorphism in a highly pigmented damselfly <i>Calopteryx haemorrhoidalis</i>. Females of this species are polymorphic, exhibiting green and bronze iridescence across the body and a dark wing spot that varies in size. We performed capture-mark-recapture on females in two populations in Northeast Algeria where we tested the effect of color morph and wing melanization on survival rates using Cormack-Jolly-Seber models. Female color morph varied within and between populations. We found interpopulation difference in the average survival rate. The color morph did not influence the survival rate in both populations. However, the size of the dark wing spot was positively correlated with survival rate in both populations. These results corroborate studies conducted on males, thus reinforcing the hypothesis that wing pigmentation is a good indicator of body condition.
