Skin Microbiome in Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis significantly affects the composition of the microbiome, not only in eczematous lesional skin, but also in normal appearing, non-lesional skin and the nose, suggesting a more global effect of the disease. In the study skin and nasal samples were collected from adult Atopic dermatitis patients (n=58) and healthy volunteers (n=46) in Denmark. Amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA (V3V4) gene was performed in order to investigate the bacterial communities (Causen et al. 2017, doi: 10.1001/jamadermatol.2017.5440) and amplicon sequensing of the 18S rRNA (V3-V5) gene was performed in order to investigate the eukaryotic microbial communities (Edslev et al. 2021, doi: 10.21203/rs.3.rs-116456/v1).
