The International Convention on Wetlands, signed in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, is an intergovernmental agreement for the conservation and environmentally sound use of wetlands and their resources. Ratification by the Federal Republic of Germany 1976. The Ramsar Agreement obliges States Parties to preserve and promote wetlands, inter alia, by naming areas that comply with the Ramsar criteria. In Schleswig-Holstein, the area “Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea and adjoining areas” was officially designated on November 15, 1991.
