Ethnographic Review of Hunting Sticks

A literature review was conducted in June 2021 using the search terms ‘hunting stick’ OR ‘throwing stick’, without limitation on subsistence type, using the eHRAF World Cultures database. I excluded examples that only pertained to games or toys, where use was only associated with ritual purposes, or where their use was as part of lore or oral traditions, unless it was noted from other sources that these societies had used such tools for hunting and/or violence. Additional sources from our own library and bibliographies were also included. Suitable excerpts were coded for location, use, prey type, and morphometrics. The dataset accompanies a submitted manuscript on an archaeological throwing stick titled "Making and breaking Pleistocene wooden weapons. A chaîne opératoire analysis of a double-pointed stick from Schöningen, Germany" authored by Annemieke Milks, Jens Lehmann, Michael Sietz, Tim Koddenberg, Utz Böhner, Dirk Leder, and Thomas Terberger.
