Untitled Itemassessment of periodontal status in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome using Raman spectroscopy

This study attempted to investigate the association between polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and periodontal status from serum and saliva via Raman spectroscopy. 92 patients with PCOS included in the study were diag-nosed as healthy & gingivitis (n = 60) and periodontitis (n = 32) after full-mouth periodontal examinations. Serum and saliva samples were collected for Raman spectroscopy and cytokine detection.Peaks at 1646 cm-1 and 2916 cm-1 in serum samples were significantly lower in the Periodontitis group than the Health & Gingivitis group (P < 0.05). However, peaks at 747 cm-1, 752 cm-1, 1118 cm-1, 1300 cm-1, 1328 cm-1, 1332 cm-1, 1539 cm-1, 1541 cm-1, 1573 cm-1 and 1597 cm-1 in the Periodontitis group were significantly higher than those in the Health & Gingivitis group (P < 0.05). The mean Raman spectra of saliva samples were statistically different (P =0.026) from healthy and perio-dontitis patients, while there was no significant difference in serum samples (P =0.247). Our findings on the significant association between PCOS and periodontitis in terms of Raman spectra of lipid and protein, serous/salivary concentration levels of cytokines and sex hormones highlights the great need for regular periodontal screening and aggressive health care integration in the long-term management of patients with PCOS.
