The Lithalsa near Mützenich – an important geotope in the northern Eifel

To the north of Mützenich are several striking, ring-shaped or long-drawn terrain in the Hohe Venn. They are fossil relics of the last Ice Age called Lithalsas. One of the largest is the capnicher Lithalsa, which is also designated as a geotope. The frost hills were formed during the last ice age in the permafrost soil by the formation of ice lenses that raised the ground. When the upper layers of the earth warmed in the summer, the soil slipped outwards and formed the annular ramparts. Today, the Lithalsas are also of great importance in the restoration of boglands.
