By analyzing long-chain alkenones in core Oki02 from the southern Okinawa Trough covering the past 20 ka, this study investigates the historical variability of sea surface temperature (SST) in this region. The SST record derived from long-chain alkenones reveals that during the late Holocene epoch since approximately 3000–4000 years ago, the markedly intensified wintertime Kuroshio Current/North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (KC/NPSG) represents the only plausible driver for the widespread sea surface warming (approximately 1–2 °C) in the North Pacific marginal seas. During the late (mid-) Holocene, the overall intensification (weakening) of the KC/NPSG system appears to be directly correlated with the synchronous latitudinal southward (northward) shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).
