Biomass ash streams in Austria

The report illustrates the biomass ash streams in Austria for the year 2013 and deals with supply, treatment routes and whereabouts. An estimated amount of about 200,000 tons was estimated. Of these, approximately 133,000 tonnes are recorded as separately collected revenues in electronic data management, and a final fate can be established for approximately 126,000 tonnes. Almost half of it is landfilled, about one third is used in cement plants and around 11 % in building materials. The ash properties are directly related to the combustion technology and the mass balances of the heating plants. Ultra-fine filter ash are strongly to very strongly enriched with sulfur, zinc, lead and cadmium. These ashes are not suitable for fertilising purposes. The soluble portion can be so high that an over-day deposit is not possible.
