High quality and reliable climatological data are needed for many
scientific and commercial purposes. Therefore, these data are globally
collected and disseminated on the Global Telecommunication System
(GTS) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) by special
observing stations on the land surface using the CLIMAT
code. Presently some 2500 stations are designated by the WMO as
climatological stations (or CLIMAT stations).
It was decided that the operational exchange of the GSN temperature
and pressure data via CLIMAT messages on the GTS be routinely
monitored. The proposed tasks of the GSN Monitoring Centers include
monitoring the availability, timeliness and completeness of the CLIMAT
messages distributed via GTS to improve the performance of the GSN,
and performing basic quality control and assurance procedures for GSN
stations to obtain high quality and completeness of the data set.
The GSNMC Monitoring Products provides access to such monitoring programs.
