English Heritage funded archaeological assessments of the five small medieval towns of Tyne and Wear. The work involved the collation and analysis of documentary, cartographic and archaeological sources for evidence of the extent and character of the urban development of the towns from the historic core to the major areas of residential and industrial expansion in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
