The lac operon in Escherichia coli is one of the best studied model systems for bacterial gene regulation. While the regulation of the lac operon has been studied in great depth in standard laboratory strains, little is known about its diversity in nature, its evolutionary history, or the selection pressures that have shaped it. We compared environmental and human isolates of E. coli and divergent clades of Escherichia. We investigated the phylogenetic history and diversity of the lac operon and compared the signatures of selection on the different genes of the operon.
