Some arthropods are known to harbor methanogens in their digestive tract. They belong to four orders, Methanobacteriales, Methanomassiliicoccales, Methanomicrobiales, and Methanosarcinales. Those arthropod-associated lineages of archaea evolved in parallel with known genera from mammals and represent new genus-level taxa. Our isolation effort provided three new isolates from millipedes that belong to the order Methanomicrobiales. Three strains were isolated from millipedes and form a new genus in the family Methanocorpusculaceae.
