When calculating the central oil film thickness of elliptical point contacts via the well-established Hamrock-Dowson formula, an anomalous phenomenon was observed: when the central Hertzian pressure within the contact zone is held constant, increasing the elliptical ratio ke beyond a critical threshold results in a reduction of the central film thickness instead of an elevation, which conflicts with the underlying physical principles. We employed the finite element method (FEM) to re-perform numerical simulations of the isothermal elliptical contact elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) problem, and introduced a novel comprehensive geometric parameter for characterizing such elliptical contacts. Within a broad range of operating speeds and loads, we fitted the modified side leakage factor and the modified central film thickness formula based on the outcomes of these numerical simulations. The modified formulas exhibit excellent agreement with the numerical results, and accurately describe the relationship between the film thickness and the elliptical ratio.
