Extraction versus non-extraction of premolars for orthodontic treatment – a scoping review

Orthodontic treatment involves the correction of crooked teeth or malocclusion using orthodontic appliances or braces. Ever since the modern era of orthodontic treatment began at the beginning of the 20th century, orthodontists have debated whether malocclusion can and/or should be treated with or without the extraction of permanent teeth and in particular premolars. Over a century later the debate continues without much sign or expectation that this issue will be resolved soon. We believe that now is a good time to examine the literature, review the findings and propose a way forward for research in this area by undertaking this scoping review.

正畸治疗涉及通过正畸器械或矫治器矫正错颌或牙齿排列不齐。自20世纪初现代正畸治疗时代开启以来，正畸专家们一直争论是否可以对错颌进行治疗，以及是否应当通过拔除永久牙齿，尤其是前磨牙来实现治疗。历经一个世纪，这一争论仍无休止，且并未显现出任何即将解决这一问题的迹象或预期。我们认为，现在是审视文献、回顾研究结果的绝佳时机，通过开展此项范围综述，为该领域的研究提出新的研究方向。
