Methane producing microorganisms (methanogens) are common residents of the human gut, where they play an important role in both normal and disease conditions. However, research into their contribution to the human gut ecosystem is hampered by a lack of clinical isolates. This project entailed isolating methanogens from stool samples and sequencing their genomes to identify variations in genome structure and content compared to previously sequenced organisms. This knowledge will provide a strong foundation for hypothesis driven experiments involving human associated methanogens.
