In a manner akin to acute critical illness, and compatible with chronic adaptive changes to high altitude, we have demonstrated a novel finding of rapid oral dysbiosis on exposure to hypobaric hypoxia. This contributes to an increasing recognition that microbiome dysbiosis may be a biomarker of acute physiological stress and hypoxia.
