Roads and paths are indispensable lifelines for the extensive management of the mountainous areas of Vorarlberg. Two-thirds of the cultural landscape typical of Vorarlberg is over 1 000 m above sea level. About a quarter of the population lives in rural areas, i.e. away from the metropolitan areas of Rheintal and Walgau. The rural network of roads with a total length of about 1 800 km opens up these mountain areas of Vorarlberg.
