THE ROLE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN DEVELOPING EFL LEARNERS' ACADEMIC WRITING SKILLS

Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, is increasingly used in English language education. This thesis discusses how AI can support EFL learners’ academic writing, especially in idea generation, language accuracy, organization, feedback, and revision. Recent research shows that ChatGPT can improve aspects of EFL students’ writing performance and motivation when it is integrated into learning activities. At the same time, excessive dependence on AI may reduce independent thinking and create concerns about accuracy and academic integrity. Therefore, AI should be used as a learning assistant rather than as a replacement for students’ own writing. Effective teacher guidance and critical evaluation of AI-generated feedback are essential for responsible AI-assisted writing.
