This project explores the use of Sanger sequencing of a portion of mitochondrial DNA, known as the Cytochrome C Oxidase (CO1) gene, to attempt to identify forensically useful allelic differences both between and within several Scottish Barn and Tawny Owls. The investigation hoped to uncover important differences among birds in an attempt to determine whether or not DNA profiles can change depending on the region from which animals originate – a feature which may be important in wildlife crime cases.
