A notice of the sequestration of an insolvents estate was published in two daily newspapers. Weekly lists of insolvents were published in the Government Gazette. The courts maintained registers of insolvency cases but searching these records was time consuming for those wishing to establish the credit worthiness of an individual.To simplify such searches three consolidated lists for the period 1842 to 1873 were compiled by accountants specialising in insolvent estates and printed for limited circulation among mercantile firms.A copy of the Victorian Insolvent List is held by the State Library of Victoria who produced VPRS 11973.
