VPRS 18161 Circular and Memorandum Book

This register contains copies of memoranda and circulars issued by the Hospitals for the Insane Branch (VA 2863), and subsequently, the Lunacy Department (VA 2864). Other issuing Government bodies were the Government Printer, the Chief Secretaries Office and the Commissioner of Taxation, as these copies pertained to all asylums in Victoria. Copies of these memoranda and circulars were maintained by the Ararat Asylum (VA 2841).Memoranda are signed by persons occupying such positions as the Inspector General of the Insane, the Chief Clerk and the Postmaster General. Memoranda relates to administrative matters relating to the operation of asylums including changes to procedures, keeping of statistics, accounting requirements, matters of personnel management.This is the only known extant register of this type.
