Three Structural Obstructions to Emergent Lorentzian Spacetime and Thermal Time from the Hyperfinite Type II, Factor

I examine whether continuum Lorentzian spacetime, and a Connes–Rovelli thermal-time flow, might emerge from the hyperfinite type II₁ factor R equipped with its canonical trace τ, rather than being posited externally as in standard applications of noncommutative spectral geometry to the Standard Model. I prove three structural obstructions to this hypothesis: (i) Any coordinate operator built as a limit of matrix logarithms along the approximating tower either converges to a bounded operator carrying no genuine continuum content, or retains the discontinuity needed to remove fermion doubling and fails to converge as a bounded operator — the two requirements are mutually exclusive (Theorem 3.1). (ii) Ultraviolet/infrared mixing survives, as a proven order-of-limits obstruction, on any finite-projection regularization of a translation-invariant, constant-Θ noncommutative field theory built on R; neither a state-regularity (Sobolev) bound nor gauge-theoretic inner fluctuations can supply the confining term needed to cure it, for reasons that are structural rather than insufficient effort (Theorem 8.1). (iii) Since τ is a trace, its modular flow is trivial, and Connes' Radon–Nikodym cocycle theorem forces every modular flow on (R,τ) to be inner; no Connes–Rovelli thermal-time direction can be recovered from (R,τ) itself (Theorem 8.2). These three results are not independent: Theorem 3.1 directly undercuts the mechanism by which an effective curvature term and a conjectured quadratic photon dispersion relation were to be derived, so the phenomenological consequences explored in §8 rest on a premise that does not hold. Separately, we review the established fact that the finite algebra A_F = ℂ ⊕ ℍ ⊕ M₃(ℂ), subject to the order-zero and order-one conditions of Connes' spectral-triple axioms together with unimodularity, forces Standard Model hypercharges to a unique anomaly-free assignment and isolates a unique Majorana mass slot for the right-handed neutrino — results that hold independently of, and are neither rescued nor threatened by, the obstructions above. I conclude that a hyperfinite II₁ factor equipped only with its canonical trace cannot supply either emergent Lorentzian time or a UV/IR-finite continuum limit. Any viable construction must pass to a non-tracial, type III state, or an equivalent twisted-spectral-triple formalism recently shown compatible with the noncommutative Standard Model, whose extension to this construction is identified as the primary remaining open problem.
