The bard GGS explains two essential functions of the loincloths associated with the spirits (ganji) in connection with the cults of possession (foley furi and danfu) and the initiation of people (kabuize) who are ‘ridden’ by the spirits during the cults. He emphasises first of all that the loincloth is a form of protection during the training of future kabuize, because some ganji are as dangerous as sorcerers. He then explains why the loincloths used during possession cults are stored in the bedroom of the koumba (an old woman who acts as a priestess) and not in the homes of the kabuize. He concludes by discussing how the loincloth associated with a ganji can act as an intercessor to benefit from the ganji's help in the event of a problem or illness.
