A method for activating a functional layer of a coating material， the method comprising the steps of: providing a functional layer that can be made adhesive by applying energy， feeding a coating material to a workpiece to be coated， at least partial activation of the functional layer by gassing the functional layer with a heated gas， the heated gas is enriched with water and preferably air is enriched with water.
