Ancient mitogenomes and shotgun sequencing of Phoenicians from Ibiza

The Phoenicians emerged in the Northern Levant around 1800 BCE and by the 9th century BCE had spread their culture across the Mediterranean Basin, establishing trading posts, colonies and settlements in various European Mediterranean and North African locations. Despite their widespread influence, what is known of the Phoenicians comes from what was written about them by the Greeks and Egyptians. In this study, we investigate the extent of Phoenician integration in Ibiza. We present nine new ancient mitogenome sequences from a pre-Phoenician (900-750 BCE) sample from Formentera (n=1) and Phoenician (primarily 5th-4th c BCE) samples from Ibiza (n=8). In addition, shotgun sequence data is presented for one of the Phoenician samples from Ibiza.
