PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a handheld work machine which can contribute to compactification of a grip section of a handle and improve handleability of the work machine by optimizing the arrangement of a lock member， an output operation member， and a position sensor in the grip section. SOLUTION: A handheld work machine includes: a prime mover 5 to be a power source; a handle 9 which has a grip section 10 extending in a longitudinal direction; an output operation member 11 which is arranged on a lower face of the grip section 10 and is vertically oscillated and operated; a lock member 13 which is arranged on a top face of the grip section 10 so as to lock the output operation member 11 at a non-operation position; and a position sensor 29 which detects the position of the output operation member 11 and contributes to control of the prime mover 5. The arrangement position of the position sensor 29 is in the grip section 10， and is at a rear position of the output operation member 11， at a lower position of the lock member 13， and on a front side of a line 310 connecting a lower end 11h of the output operation member 11 and a rear end 13f of the lock member 13.
