Letter detailing Pte. Foster's part in the first ever use of Tanks in battle, the attack on Flers, 15th Spetember 1916.
Accoring to T. Pidgeon, 'The Tanks at Flers', vol. 1, Appendices 1 and 2, Pte. Foster served as a gunner in Tank D24, 751, commanded by Lt. W. Stones, part of no.4 section, D coy. Heavy Section Machine Gun Corps. His unit was attached to the 50th Division on 15th September 1916. This tank got as far as the 1st objective on that day having passed over/through the German front line. The area of action was around Martinpuich.
Pte. 200816 William Ernest Foster, D Coy. Heavy Section, Machine Gun Corps (later D Bn. Heavy Branch, Machine Gun Corps and 4th Bn. Tank Corps), served originally in the Machine Gun Corps (Motors).
