Anthropogenic pollution shapes sediment and water microbiomes of Buriganga and Turag Rivers in Dhaka, Bangladesh

The Buriganga and Turag rivers of Dhaka are heavily polluted by industrial discharge, sewage, and urban activities. This study examines the impact of anthropogenic pollution on microbial communities in river water and soil sediments, utilizing 16S rRNA based metagenomic analysis. By profiling bacterial diversity and community structure, the research focused on identifying pollution sources and potentially harmful microorganisms, and compared microbiomes between water and sediment environments. The findings will support environmental monitoring and sustainable management of urban rivers in Bangladesh.
