Surface soil metals and nutrients were measured in watershed 263 located in southwest Baltimore City. The 5 cm samples were taken randomly stratified by a landuse/cover classification system in Urban Forest Effects (UFORE) plots. The soils were digested with a strong acid and the following elements were analyzed: Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S, Sb, Se, Sr, Ti, V, and Zn. Composite samples (0-5 cm) taken from each plot were air dried, ground and sieved through a 2 mm sieve. The sieved samples were digested at the Baltimore Ecosystem Study and University of Maryland Baltimore County Lab using a nitric extraction technique. A synopsis of the methods is as follows: ~2.0 g of ground, oven-dry soil were ashed at 475 deg C for 4 hours. 10 ml of 7.7N HNO3 were added to soil on a hot plate and brought close to a boil. Samples were filtered using #42 whatman paper. These extracts were sent to the Cornell University Nutrient Analysis Laboratory to determine acid soluble concentrations using an Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Admissions Spectrophotometer (ICP). 16.
