16S rRNA gene sequencing of human oral microbiome in Indian population

This study aims to characterize the human oral microbiome in healthy individuals (H), periodontitis patients (P), type 2 diabetes mellitus patients (T2DM), and T2DM patients with periodontitis (T2DM_P) from Maharashtra, India using metagenomics. Oral plaque samples from 10 H, 10 P, 20 T2DM, and 20 T2DM_P individuals were analyzed by sequencing the V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene. The study investigates microbial composition, relative abundance, and individual-level variation, offering novel insights into the oral microbiome of an Indian population with a high prevalence of T2DM and associated periodontitis.
